Belly dance - رقص شرقي is a Western name for an Arabic style of dance developed in the Middle East. Some American devotees refer to it simply as "Middle Eastern Dance". In the Arabic language it is known as raqs sharqi رقص شرقي ("eastern dance") or sometimes raqs baladi رقص بلدي ("national" or "folk" dance). The term "raqs sharqi" may have originated in Egypt. It has a variety of specifications towards that culture that make its rich history that much more engaging. This is why a lot of the prevailing attitudes about belly dancing often enrage those that practice it.
The traditional costume for this exotic dance includes a long skirt, a very short blouse or bra, which is needed in order to leave the belly area, exposed, as that is the part most used as the name itself suggests. A scarf over the head and sometimes covering half of the face along with a large number of jewelry specific for this performance will conclude the necessary accessories for this dance.
A lot of people compare belly dancing to exotic dancing and have derogatory comments all lined up towards belly dancers that reflect the ignorance of a lot of people. The facts about the significance of belly dancing couldn’t be more in opposition to this mentality, however, and learning about this art form can be very enlightening to old prejudices and ideologies.
There are a lot of misconceptions about the art of belly dancing that can be dispelled with a simple knowledge of the art form and its particulars. For one, it is often commonly believed that belly dancers wear a jewel in their navels.
This is not true and was introduced by Hollywood to cover the navel. In fact, traditional belly dancers do not use a navel jewel because it has no significance to the art of belly dancing.
If you decide to take up belly dancing, keep in mind that with such a rhythmic dance involving many moving body parts, you can easily damage your muscles or sprain an ankle. So take care. Bellydancing is performed to extraordinarily rhythmic music, which may easily take hold of your mind before it does your body, so practice with care and enjoy a toned body and a fun dance.
